Description
Lake Road Animal Hospital in Horseheads, New York is searching for a full-time associate veterinarian to join our independently owned, companion animal practice. We are interested in finding a doctor with a strong desire to provide preventative medicine and offer client education to strengthen the bond between pet parent and pet. Our practice also provides emergent care during regular business hours so there is generally an interesting mixture of cases. The associate should possess a constant commitment to learning, always improving, and is encouraged to bring new services and ideas to better service our patients and clients. We can provide mentorship to a new doctor to grow and develop your veterinary skills with our experienced doctor team. Our appointment schedule is flexible, and you will be able to decide if you wish to run 30 minute or 40-minute appointments, or a combination of those appointment lengths. Our priority as an independently owned practice is to provide our associates with control over their schedules and allow you to practice medicine as you desire. This position is four days per week and includes all aspects of general practice care including surgery and dentistry.
Our hospital is located just a short distance from the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York. With its thriving agribusiness, the Finger Lakes region has become a vibrant area offering a quality of life not easily found. Cornell University in Ithaca (a small city offering cultural sophistication many large cities cannot rival) and Watkins Glen International Speedway are both located within 45 minutes from the practice. If you enjoy wine, the Finger Lakes area is for you! Those are just a bonus to all the recreational activities provided by the area year-round. A few of the popular outdoor activities in this region include: boating, hiking, biking, waterfall viewing, skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling. The city of Corning is also just a short distance from the practice and offers its own quaint sophistication.
Our practice leadership is focused on supporting our team and providing a workplace that is safe for learning, growing, debate, and individual development. Decisions about how the practice works are made with significant input from the team. We offer continuing education to all, we structure some team meetings just to focus on team development, and we live our core values daily. We work hard as a team, we have compassion for our patients, clients, and one another, we always work with integrity, we all strive to improve as a team and individuals, and we enjoy having fun while at work. We keep snacks, easy to grab breakfast or lunches, and drinks for our team. No one should work hungry! We encourage people who are not feeling well to take time off to rest. Everyone has 40 hours of sick time per year in addition to their paid time off. Further, we do not tolerate poor behavior by clients toward our team and will ask clients to seek care elsewhere if they cannot behave appropriately.
We have a strong commitment to ensuring access to veterinary care for all. We offer a standard of care that requires higher fees for our services, but we did not want that to be a deterrent for anyone that desires that standard of care for their pet. We provide multiple payment options including VetBilling, which allows clients to pay over time with structured payment plans. These payment plans have been highly successful for both clients and our practice. From our perspective we have been able to offer better care resulting in better patient outcomes, which has in turn led to increased trust and compliance with recommendations from our clients. Our support team is fully trained to manage financial conversations and will assist clients relieving you of that duty in most situations.
Our practice offers Idexx DR digital radiography, Idexx in-house laboratory equipment, digital dental radiography, and a therapeutic laser. We also have an Oncura ultrasound with a doctor and two technicians certified in its use. We are a Cat Friendly practice and have a dedicated feline only examination room. In the past, we have scheduled cat only days in our newly remodeled annex building so no dogs were even in the same building on that day. If your interest lies with cats, we have a space for you! Most members of our team have been through Fear Free training. Although certification has not been maintained, we still highly value creating a fear free experience for our patients. We are a paper light practice and utilize Cornerstone practice management software to maintain electronic medical records. We provide an experienced exam room assistant to work with you in every out-patient exam to develop your medical log, estimates, and final invoice. You will not spend many hours after appointments completing medical notes. We would prefer you to spend your time outside the practice enjoying your own life. We do provide you with a laptop and remote access so you can take work home if you desire. Dr. Brennen offers advanced orthopedic procedures and sees several referrals from area practices for those services. We would LOVE to add a veterinarian with an interest in physical therapy!
We employ a practice manager with 27 years of experience, five licensed veterinary technicians, three receptionists, and a team of four FTE amazing assistants trained to assist in exam rooms, with treatments, and with surgery/dentistry. Our practice is a member of a Well-Managed Practice Group facilitated by Denise Tumblin of Wutchiett, Tumblin, and Associates (nationally renowned veterinary management and valuation specialists). We have fostered a strong relationship with Cornell University and VCA Colonial and utilize their referral services regularly.
We offer no after-hour emergency care but do utilize Guardian Vets to answer calls after hours. This company provides NYS licensed veterinarians and veterinary technicians to provide guidance to clients with sick pets when we are not available. We keep two appointments per doctor per day available for same day use only, so that emergent cases are not handled as drop offs or squeezed into your schedule.
We encourage applicants of any experience level to apply. We are just as interested in your enthusiasm for your chosen profession and your ability to assimilate into our practice culture, as we are in your veterinary skill set. Our team is highly valued, and we work diligently to ensure that all members of the team are fulfilled and challenged in their role. We strive for excellence and take great pride in our practice.
We offer a blended production/salary-based compensation (no negative accrual), or we can provide straight salary if you prefer. In addition, we offer medical insurance, vacation, continuing education time and budget, 401K with match of up to 4%, professional licenses and dues, malpractice insurance, reduced cost pet care, and a work environment that removes as much stress from being a veterinarian as is possible. Compensation is negotiable and will be determined between you and the practice owner. We have no interest in underpaying anyone and will negotiate in good faith. Ownership opportunity is available, and an interest in ownership is a significant plus.
